UCT Ask For Donations of Boxes and Crates to Remove Contents of Library

  Staff from the UCT Jagger Library have been given a window of access to the building to remove any remaining works before they get further damaged.   Cape Town, South Africa (23 April 2021)  – A wildfire broke out early on Sunday morning, 18 April 2021, at Rhodes Memorial and spread to UCT a short while later. The fire jumped and spread to the University of Cape Town (UCT) Reading Room at Jagger Library, which housed over 200 years worth of history. Thankfully the library’s fire system kicked in, and only this part of the library was damaged. The system has prevented even further loss. The loss of the Reading Room has been a massive one, but people are working tirelessly to try and restore some of the lost information. A team from UCT were given a window last night to enter the building and to start collecting as much of its contents as possible. They took to Facebook to ask for donations of cardboard boxes and crates, which will be used to remove books and other items from the libra

Hout Bay Man to do 27km ‘Freedom Paddle’ for 27 000 Meals

  Kola Cohen plans to paddle 27km on Freedom Day to raise funds for the ‘Love in a Bowl’ organisation to provide 27 000 meals in Hout Bay.   Hout Bay, South Africa (22 April 2021)  – On Freedom Day, the 27th of April 2021, South African’s will celebrate 27 years of democracy. Inspired by the significance this day holds, Kola Cohen, a 19-year-old from Hout Bay, will be paddling 27km to provide 27,000 meals for vulnerable Capetonians. Paddling on a prone board, Kola will be participating in the  Freedom Paddle , an initiative where paddlers paddle from Cape Town to Robben Island (and back) to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela and the struggle heroes who fought for South Africa’s freedom. Looking to pay it forward, Kola has launched a  crowdfunding campaign  on BackaBuddy to support Love in a Bowl, a community farming initiative that delivers a ‘community pot’ of nutritious, organic food to 32 different creches, soup kitchens, and NGOs in the Hout Bay community. 13-Year-Old Transplant Recipient Loves Her New Heart

  13-year-old Parusia Muhigirwa received a new heart in February 2021, and it is going strong; she loves her new heart and is thankful for everything her doctors have done for her.   Cape Town, South Africa (22 April 2021)  – Parusia Muhigirwa has been given a new lease on life, and it is all thanks to the generosity of a family unknown. You see, 13-year-old Parusia was waiting for a new heart, and her call came in February; the call has meant she will get to grow up and hopefully save a few lives herself. Parusia received her new heart thanks to teams from the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital (RCWMCH) and Groote Schuur Hospital. This heart transplant was the first one done in the last 13 years at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. Parusia Muhigirwa is so thankful for her second chance that she plans to use it by saving even more lives and becoming a doctor when she grows up. Parusia was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, which led to end-stage heart failure.
